Helen M. Voss

CLINTON — Helen M. Voss, age 93, of Clinton, formerly of the Ten Mile, died Saturday, December 19, 2009, at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23rd, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Troy and Neil Tietjens, Blake Boyer, Kevin Sterk and Mark Vetter. Honorary casket bearers will be Jodi Rushmore, Angela Tietjens, Karisa Tietjens, Deb Sterk, Jane Boyer, Janelle Vetter and Sarah Schrader. The Pape Funeral Home, Clinton is assisting the family.

Helen was born at the family home in Teeds Grove, Iowa, on April 28, 1916, the daughter of Herman and Lena Huebner Behrens. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith. Helen attended Teeds Grove School and Miles High School. She cleaned houses while going to school, walking through fields to get there. Helen married Delbert J. Voss on June 16, 1936, at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage. A wedding dance followed at the Rainbow Gardens at Ten Miler Corners. Helen and Del operated the Ten Mile Gas Station from 1938 to 1965. She helped Del with various station duties. Later, she worked at Nielson Clearing House and also cleaned houses for various people. She also worked at the Sarah Harding Home. She lived in the Voss family home from 1965 till October 2006 when she moved to Prairie Hills in Clinton. In August of 2008, she went to the Alverno. Helen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing cards, baking and crocheting.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Carol (Bill) Schrader of Charlotte, Iowa, and Joanne (Jim) Tietjens of Clinton; seven grandchildren, Deb (Kevin) Sterk, Jane (Blake) Boyer, Janelle (Mark) Vetter, Sarah Schrader, Neil (Angie) Tietjens, Jodi (Kurt) Rushmore and Troy (Karisa) Tietjens; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilbert (Leola) Behrens of Teeds Grove, Iowa; four sisters-in-law, Madelyn Behrens, Marian Behrens, Evelyn Behrens and Velma Voss all of Clinton; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert; five brothers and a sister. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Preston.
