Mildred Johanna “Millie” Goers Matthews

DUNLAP, Tenn. — Mildred Johanna “Millie” Goers Matthews, 92, died Friday, December 18, 2009.

She was born in Clinton County, Iowa, to William and Meta Goers and attended rural schools, graduating from DeWitt High School in 1934. She was employed by the Agricultural Adjustment Administration and Iowa Mutual Insurance Company prior to her marriage to Marine Master Technical Sergeant Byron Ray “Bud” Matthews in 1944. They resided in Clinton until 1983 when they retired to Barefoot Bay, Fla. They moved to Chattanooga in 1998 and were married for 62 years until Mr. Matthews’ death in 2006.

She was an active member of Chancy Lutheran Church in Clinton and Concordia Lutheran Church in Barefoot Bay.

Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by sisters Wilma Knutsen, Violet Goers, Edna Goers and Esther Barber.

Survivors include a son, Byron Allen (Gina) Matthews of Sandia Park, NM; daughter, Mary Beth (Tom) Clark of Chattanooga; brother, Harry Goers of Maquoketa, IA; grandson, Byron James (Stephanie) Matthews of Mount Airy, MD; granddaughters, Leah Clark of Shiojiri, Nagano, Japan, and Joanna Clark of Chattanooga; great-granddaughter, Rebecca Matthews of Mount Airy, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life and burial are planned for a later date in Clinton.

Arrangements are pending at Lemke Funeral Homes, South Chapel, 2610 Manufacturing Drive.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416 or the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults, 1800 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404.

Local arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road.
