Beginning next year, Camanche Elementary School will be offering students options on what fruits and vegetables they want for lunch.
Previously, the elementary school lunch crew has served all of the food components published on the menu to each child.
Director of Business Roxanne Aude told the Board of Education that this practice sees a good amount of waste from students throwing away certain items.
During its Monday meeting, the board approved switching from a serve “model” to an “offer” model for the school’s lunch program.
Aude and Cafeteria Director Becky Swalve recently traveled to another school district to see the “offer” lunch model in action. Aude said the process was very smooth.
With this format, staff will inform students what food choices they have each day. Aude recommended that students be required to take the main entrée. They would then be offered two choices of vegetables and two choices of fruits. Students would be required to take at least one vegetable and one fruit.
Aude told the board that she felt this format would be a better one than the old system.
She felt the district would see savings by not putting all of the food on the tray only to have students throw some of it away. She added this also falls in step with the lunch requests First Lady Michelle Obama has made.
“We’ll be ahead of the curve because there’s a lot of districts in our area that are not looking to make this mandated yet,” Aude said.
