CAMANCHE —
Trevor Willis and Charlie Blount are in the running to fill the vacant seat for Camanche City Council. The two will vie for the spot with different backgrounds.
The city will hold a special election for the vacant Council seat on Feb. 12. Former City Councilman Eric Hosette announced his resignation in early November. His letter of resignation, effective Dec. 1, stated he will move out of the area to pursue new opportunities.
Council members considered appointing someone to the position, but ultimately decided to hold an election, giving all the opportunity to run.
Blount is running on a fiscally conservative platform. Two of his biggest goals to improve the community include terminating the city administrator and a 20 percent reduction of city employees.
“I would like to bring a different approach to the City Council,” Blount said. “I would like to help create more expansion and growth.”
In addition to his platform, creating an atmosphere that creates job availability and reasonable living costs for residents is a top priority. Blount says the current consumer taxes are counterproductive.
Willis brings four years of experience as a Camanche City Councilman from 2006-2010. Having helped get many of the recent big projects on their way, Willis says he looks forward to assist in the completion.
“I like to be able to help the city and have input in what is going on,” Willis said.
While he does not favor high taxes, Willis says he understands that there is a lot more that goes into city planning and cutting costs must be done within reason.
“Having been through this before, I know that you have to take everything into account and can’t just start slashing everything left and right,” Willis said.
A total of five packets of nomination papers have been taken from Camanche City Hall, but only two were turned in, according to City Administrator Tom Roth.
