CAMANCHE —
After nearly 10 months of detours and streets being torn up, the Washington Boulevard project came to a close on Tuesday.
The big project that redeveloped the main drag and cost over $3.5 million has reached its final stages.
“It was quite an undertaking, but people did very well with the inconveniences,” City Administrator Tom Roth said.
Once a controversial topic at city council meetings, the project first took off in February and plugged along smoothly ever since. Minor speed bumps included problems with signage and working with local businesses.
“Most businesses were understanding and realized a few months of construction are nothing when it means improving the overall appearance of our city,” Roth said.
With mild weather contractors were able to get an earlier start than expected. The project was only delayed slightly to accommodate for variances that popped up during construction and was completed on time.
“Our original contract was for the end of October, but some things came up and we had to add extra work on,” City Engineer Dan Solchenberger said.
While major construction has wrapped up, it isn’t all over yet. Pavement markings will not be put in until spring, to avoid painting them in twice. Contractors will go over a punch list of minor items to complete and sidewalks will be finished.
“There are just a few minor things to be dealt with,” Solchenberger said. “The community has been patient and cooperative.”
