Turnovers help Indians score twice early to beat Rebels

GOOSE LAKE — Camanche took advantage of two early Northeast turnovers, turning a short field into a pair of scores on its way to a 47-8 victory Friday night to spoil Northeast’s homecoming in Class 2A District 4 football.

“When we have homecoming there are a lot of distractions, and I’m sure that’s true for everyone,” Camanche coach Steve Dougherty said. “It was important to get off to a strong start.”

Devin Norman set the tone for Camanche, intercepting a Matt Lorenzen pass and returning it to the 14-yard line. A horse-collar tackle on the play resulted in a Northeast penalty that pushed the ball to the 7.

“We try to cover the whole field and just have some really good secondary players,” Dougherty said. “In man coverage, our primary focus is to stop the run, and we count on those guys to protect against the pass.”

Four plays later, Aaron Shum scored for the 6-0 lead.

The Indians were back in scoring position moments later when Lucas Thiede put a big hit on Lorenzen, jarring the ball loose. Andrew Donohue was right there to fall on the ball at the Northeast 8.

“That’s kind of how our defense is set up, to put on as much pressure as we can,” Dougehrty said. “We’ve been in that situation where we put the team in easy scoring position, so we were fortunate to score on those opporunities.”

It didn’t take long for the Indians to score again, with Norman running in from 5 yards out with 7:20 remaining in the quarter.

“Turnovers happen and they’re never at a good time,” Northeast coach Ryan Uhruh said. “At the beginning of the game it’s something we had to overcome. We had to battle back from it, and we finished out the quarter real well, but being down 14-0 in the first quarter, it’s tough to battle back.”

Camanche got another interception later in the quarter, but the Northeast defense kept the Indians from scoring again until the second quarter.

“I was proud to see our guys keep their heads up and battle back the whole game,” Unruh said.

With two of its district losses coming by a combined eight points, Camanche’s win could be a huge boost.

“One of our team goals was to qualify for the state tournament, and we can’t do that without district wins, and this was a district win,” Dougherty said. “Basically, we have to win out.”
