CAMANCHE —
With City Councilman Eric Hosette resigning, the city plans to hold a special election to fill the vacant seat.
During a work session this week, the council discussed whether to appoint someone or hold a special election.
“I would recommend a special election so the position would be filled to coincide with Councilman Varner,” Councilwoman Linda Kramer said. “The only way to pacify the community is to hold a special election.”
The council has already observed several individuals who would be interested in filling the spot.
“There’s a lot of interest out there,” Mayor Ken Fahlbeck said. “People are following the city. We want to give everyone the opportunity to run.”
Hosette’s resignation is effective Dec. 1. In his letter, he stated that he will be moving out of the area to pursue new opportunities.
This election would require the same procedure as a regular election as far as nomination papers and signatures required.
The council approved the procedure of holding a special election with the proposed date of Feb. 12. City officials plan to contact the Clinton County Auditor’s Office to finalize plans for the election.
Other actions:
• Councilmen received, accepted and placed on file Eric Hosette’s resignation from Camanche City Council.
• Councilmen approved the Annual Urban Renewal Report.
• Councilmen approved the consideration of participation in the Iowa Income Offset Program. This program will protect the city and help them assess costs. The Fire Department will also benefit from the program when dealing with ambulance costs, according to Fire Chief Dave Schutte.
• Councilmen approved the first reading of an ordinance on community protection regulating adult entertainment businesses.
The ordinance defined adult entertainment businesses, location requirements, sign regulations, licensing requirements and other legal provisions. No adult establishments shall be located on any lot that has a property line within 1,000 feet of the property line of any residentially zoned property, public or private nursery school, elementary school or secondary school, childcare facility, religious institution, public parks or recreational paths, public or private cemetery or public housing facility.
Adult establishments are only permitted in specific manufacturing zoning districts, M1, M2 and M3 or in any commercial district as a special use approved by the Camanche Zoning Board of Adjustment. The fee for licensing is $100.
