CAMANCHE —
A family of four is healthy and happy in their home, thanks to one clever 10-year-old.
Nolan Baker accepted a special junior firefighter award from the Camanche Fire Department on Tuesday for his valiant effort to protect his home.
“I am very proud to have Nolan as a part of our fire safety program,” Fire Chief Dave Schutte said. “This young man went above and beyond to protect his family home.”
The fifth-grader put his fire prevention learning to the test when he came home from school on Feb. 21 to find his garage engulfed with smoke. Baker ran next door to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
Camanche firefighters responded to the call quickly, putting out the smoke before it became a serious fire. Because of the quick detection, the home located at 1909 10th St. had only minor smoke damage.
After some cleaning, the family was able to continue their daily lives and stay in their home. Parents Jennifer and Trevor were overjoyed by their son’s courageous act.
“He really stepped up and we are able to enjoy are home because of it,” Jennifer said. “We are very proud of him.”
All third-grade students at Camanche schools take a fire prevention course provided by the Camanche Fire Department.
The program includes lessons on what to do in the event of a fire.
