After completing the playground down at Rotary Park, the Clinton Rotary Club is now setting its eyes on another park that is currently without a playground.
“We really felt that we had done everything down at the Rotary Park,” Mary Swanson, from the Clinton Rotary Club, said.
Emma Young Park, located near the Ericksen Community Center, has not had any swings, slides or climbing equipment for decades. Parks Superintendent Tom Krogman said there used to be a wooden playground structure at the park, but it has long ago rotted away. He added that at the time, Harding Elementary School installed a nice playground, so they never replaced the one in the park.
“Now the school’s gone and they took the equipment out,” Krogman said.
Swanson said the Rotary Club felt there was a need for some sort of play equipment at Emma Young Park. She said a lot of families attend sporting events at the park and there is nothing there for the younger children to play on.
Krogman has already ordered the playground equipment. This includes small swings, a climber and some chairs that spin. Krogman said he also hopes to install a zip line at the playground. The playground will include a safety surface.
“Not only is it good safe equipment for the kids, but it is also pretty maintenance free,” Swanson said.
Krogman will handle the construction of the playground. It is expected to be installed by early spring or summer.
Once the Emma Young Park project is finished, the Rotary Club will turn its attention to the Rainbow Park near Garfield Street.
The Rotary Club will hold its fifth annual Rotary Auction on April 5 at the Rastrelli’s Tuscany Center, 238 Main Ave., to raise money for the playgrounds. The club also recently received a $50,000 grant from the Clinton County Development Association.
