Council to revisit marina contract

CLINTON — A change in management at the Clinton Marina could be coming if the Clinton City Council terminates the current contract with Skipper Marine Development at the council meeting Tuesday night.

The contract with SMD for marina operation and management runs through April 2013 and will automatically renew for another five-year term if council action is not taken by Dec. 31.

At the last Committee of the Whole meeting, council members voted 5-0 to terminate the contract. Councilwoman Jennifer Graf, at-large, was absent and Councilwoman Maggie Klaes, Ward 1, was not in the room at the time the vote was taken.

The council also voted to look at creating a contract for marina operations and management that would span five years with the option to renew or terminate the contract annually.  The motion was made by Councilman Paul Gassman, Ward 4.

This contract alteration would require the city to put out a request for proposal, which SMD could bid on if they wanted to continue operation of the marina.

Gassman also made a motion for the city to investigate the viability of the city taking over operations and management.  According to documents provided to council members, this switch could potentially save the city $60,000 when compared with the current contract.

The council will vote on whether to terminate the contract at the City Council meeting Tuesday night.
