New dropboxes aid medication disposal

Residents can now dispose of medicine all year long

CLINTON — Each year, people come out to dispose of their expired prescriptions during the Clinton County Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet Day.

Four new medication disposal boxes placed around the county will allow residents to dispose of their prescriptions year round.

During the past five years local law enforcement has worked together and brought in more than a ton of medication to be disposed of properly, Clinton County Sheriff Rick Lincoln said during a Monday morning press conference. Clinton Police Chief Brian Guy said in a press release that during the past year, almost 400 pounds have been turned in for disposal.

“Instead of having one day where people will have to make sure they schedule their time in order to bring those medications to us, they’ll have the opportunity, during normal business hours at those four locations... to bring those in and drop them off year round,” Lincoln said.

Starting in November, expired medications can be disposed during normal business hours. Medication can be left in the original containers. Mercury thermometers, sharps and needles or biomedical waste will not be accepted in the medication disposal boxes.

Iowa American Water, the Gateway ImpACT Coalition and Clinton County law enforcement agencies have partnered together to bring these disposal boxes to the county.

These drop boxes will be located in the lobbies of the Camanche police station, Clinton police station, DeWitt police station and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.
