Readers will get a chance to interact with Mississippi River writers and enthusiasts at a special event this weekend.
Free coffee and discussion on the significance of being a river town are on the docket for the Big River Magazine event.
“It’s a great way to reach out and meet with readers and even for people to meet other people within their community,” Reggie McLeod, editor and publisher, said.
Staff from the magazine, which covers stories along the Mississippi from the Twin Cities to the Quad-Cities, will be on hand to speak to readers from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at 392 Caffe.
McLeod will lead the discussion along with Pamela Eyden, news and photography editor, and Dick Papke, sales representative. Eyden is slated to read an excerpt from her new book, the fifth edition of “The Little Tow-Watchers Guide,” a guide to towboats and barges on the upper Mississippi.
“It’s our most popular book,” McLeod said. “We weren’t even planning on putting out a fifth edition, but the readers kept asking for it.”
Various staff members visit different river towns each winter to meet with readers and gather story ideas. Last year they visited nearby cities Dubuque and Rock Island, Ill. This will be their first visit to Clinton, although the magazine often covers Clinton happenings.
“Sometimes we discover fun story ideas from these meetings,” McLeod said. “It’s exciting to see what people have to say.”
