CLINTON —
The Clinton marina will be up for grabs next spring.
The Clinton City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday not to renew the contract with Skipper Marine Development for another five years, opening the facility to other potential managers and operators.
During the last Committee of the Whole meeting, the council voted to look at creating a contract for marina operations and management that would span five years with the option to renew or terminate the contract annually. The motion was made by Councilman Paul Gassman, Ward 4.
This contract alteration would require the city to put out a request for proposal, which SMD could bid on if they wanted to continue operation of the marina.
During that meeting Gassman also made a motion for the city to investigate the viability of the city taking over operations and management. According to documents provided to council members, this switch could potentially save the city $60,000 when compared with the current contract.
SMD will continue operations and management of the marina through April 2013.
In other action, the council:
• Passed the new animal control and protection ordinance.
• Changed the minimum billable volume for sewer charges. The ordinance amendment changes the billable volume for sewer customers to one unit, or 100 cubic feet, per month. The minimum per quarter would be altered to three units, 300 cubic feet, per quarter.
The ordinance also will add a new section that states sewer users who are not customers of Iowa American Water and do not have a meter for water usage will be billed a minimum usage of 8 units, 800 cubic feet, per month or 24 units, 2,400 cubic feet, per quarter. The latter affects approximately 16 customers.
