CLINTON —
The cost of a Clinton High School renovation project has gone past its contingency funds.
During the Monday night meeting, the Clinton Board of Education approved several change orders for the project. All together, the change orders added $16,347.51 to the renovation.
“Unfortunately it puts us over the contingency by $12,000. However, in renovations you can never expect what’s going to come from renovations,” Superintendent Deb Olson said.
A change order of $5,077.50 was approved for the re-working of existing sewer line at the Boys P.E. toilet. The existing below floor sewer line that serves the water closets is sloped up slightly and has to be removed so a new line can be reinstalled sloping down.
Another change order was approved to relocate the existing sewer line at the Boy’s P.E. locker room and the replacement of two floor drains. According to the agenda packet, the existing sewer line was directly below where a new masonry wall, with footing, was to be installed.
This change order added $4.486.28.
The school board also approved the addition of window removals around Yourd Gymnasium. Olson explained that originally, they believed the existing windows were thought to have asbestos in the glazing compound and were going to require an asbestos abatement specialty contractor. However, it was discovered they do not contain asbestos. Olson said it was more economical to have the general contractor to remove the windows. This change order was approved at $7,564.38.
One change order actually saved the school funds. The board approved a change order in the amount of negative $780.65. This is due to the deletion of a masonry wall at the back of storage room 104.
Olson expects other change orders, including several deductions. She said the project should come out approximately $9,000 over.
