MOLINE, Ill. —
Coach Joe Shovlain knows he’ll see some physical mistakes from his Clinton Community College men’s basketball team. They’re bound to happen to any squad. What he finds frustrating is another kind of mistake.
“The big thing is we’re making mental mistakes after physical errors,” Shovlain said Friday night after the Cougars dropped a 68-54 decision to Black Hawk College. “We didn’t execute at times we needed to; one guy misses an assignment and the team fails.”
Shovlain pointed to several instances in Friday’s loss.
“At one time, we’re up 25-20 and had the momentum,” Shovlain said. “James Randolph goes in for an easy two points but is fouled and it’s not called, so he gets a technical. Then they go on a 10-0 run.
“(Later), Richard Hurt has the ball on a 3-on-1 break and is tackled at halfcourt, and it’s another no-call. They score at the other end. It would have been a three-point game and instead is 59-52.”
After that, Clinton was forced to gamble to try to get back into the game and Black Hawk was able to pad its lead.
Hurt and Charles Pemberton scored 12 points each to lead the Cougars (1-4), while Xzavion Jones finished with 11. Cody Cooley, a former Davenport West player, led all scorers with 24 points for Black Hawk. Jordan Schaller, a freshman from Erie, Ill., added two points for the Braves.
