Landfill fire put out overnight

CLINTON — Garbage at the Clinton County landfill caught fire last night around 10 p.m.

The Low Moor, Camanche, Andover and Clinton fire departments responded to the fire at the Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency at 4292 220th St.

According to Lt. Jim Sowle with the Camanche Fire Department, the fire was initially in a fairly large area.

CCASWA Director Brad Seward said the fire affected a 50-by-25-yard area, which is not that big by landfill standards.

“Our biggest concern was that it didn’t spread out of the cell and onto nearby grass,” Seward said.

The fire departments and CCASWA put out the fire using water and used other means such as soil to smother the flames. The CFD left the scene around 1:30 a.m. according to Sowle.

Although the cause of the fire is undetermined, Seward said he suspects the landfill received a small amount of ash in Saturday’s garbage.

“The lesson we learned is even if you think the ash is out, continue to stir and douse it,” he said.

There were no injuries or damage. CCASWA operations were running as usual Monday morning.
