CLINTON —
City officials plan to improve Clinton by demolishing nuisance buildings that blight various areas throughout the city.
The Clinton City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution accepting bids and awarding contracts to demolish 10 Clinton structures ranging from dilapidated homes to neglected businesses. The cost to demolish varies by building, but in total the city will spend a little more than $63,000 to tear them down.
The structures to be demolished are located at 500 10th Ave. South, 849 11th Ave. South, 506 Second Ave. South, 816 Roosevelt Street, 1913 Camanche Ave., 1917 Camanche Ave., 1404 Camanche Ave., 918 Roosevelt Street, 922 Roosevelt Street and 1523 13th Ave. South.
Five of the properties are owned by the city. Plans to place a lien on one more will eventually result in the city owning that property as well, according to Interim City Administrator Jessica Kinser.
Traditionally, the city would place a lien on all the non-city owned properties for property demolition costs, which has led to the city owning the properties with a lien. Instead of taking the traditional approach, Kinser suggested a lien not be placed on the remaining four properties, causing them to remain on the tax rolls at their current level.
The demolition process was previously halted due to lack of funds, but bond proceeds have remobilized it.
The demolition work will start immediately after the contracts are signed and the demolition will need to be completed within 30 days of when it starts. All grading and seeding work must be complete by May 15.
Another 30 to 40 buildings are also slated to be demolished when funds are available, according to Building and Neighborhood Services Official Mike Harmon.
