CLINTON —
People interested in abstract art have a chance to purchase a sketch created by a Clinton doctor to benefit the United Way.
Monday was the first day of an online auction held by the United Way of Clinton County. This auction features the 9-by-12-inch framed artwork, “Palm Springs,” created by local gastroenterologist, hepatologist and nutritionist Ahmed Waheed Cheema, M.D.
“It is a unique piece done with markers on thick paper that would accent any decor and appeal to many art aficionados,” Cheryl McCulloh, of the Clinton United Way, said during the weekly Rotary Club meeting on Monday.
After the meeting, Cheema said he wanted to pick a lively piece that is bright, cheerful and a decent size. He does not sell any of his art. Instead he will give his pieces to people with the understanding that they will donate an amount of money to a charity of their choosing.
People can bid on the sketch at uwca.weebly.com., with final bids being accepted by 2 p.m. March 29. Bids will be accepted in $10 increments with a minimum starting bid of $350. Proceeds will go to help individuals and families in the community.
Cheema usually begins a piece of art with his 2-year-old daughter sitting in his lap. She will do the first two strokes on the canvas and he will take it from there.
“Whenever you sit down with a piece of paper and pen or canvas and brush, you don’t really know what will come out of it,” Cheema said. “In reality it’s really what comes out of your hand when you grab the pencil. It’s not a conscious effort.”
Cheema currently practices at Medical Associates and is a consultant with Gastroenterology Consultants in Moline, Ill.
