CLINTON —
A former Ashford University employee has been charged with theft in the first degree.
The charge was filed against Stacy L. Powers, 28, of 1505 Lawrence Ave., Camanche, on Jan. 31, according to court documents.
According to those documents, Powers was the Student Development and Activities coordinator for Ashford University between August 2008 and April 27, 2012, when she was placed on administrative leave. Her duties included oversight of the Student Government Association account, according to the affidavit.
A representative of Ashford University filed a police report on May 7, 2012 about an internal theft. Ashford’s Associate Director of Human Resources told police that Powers allegedly used the student government account to make unauthorized withdrawals and debit card purchases in excess of $10,000 between Jan. 2, 2009 and April 26, 2012, according to the affidavit.
According to the documents, these transactions allegedly were for personal use by Powers and were not used for Ashford University business.
Powers’ first court appearance was set for 9 a.m. Friday. However, according to Iowa Courts Online, the preliminary hearing was waived by her attorney, Robert McGee, on Tuesday. Her next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
