Police investigate break-in at school

CLINTON — Clinton police are still investigating a Monday morning break-in at Lincoln Alternative School, 1850 Bluff Blvd., in which one man is being held on five charges.

Alexander S. Ruiz, 36, 1831 S. Bluff Blvd., is being held on a $10,000 cash bond for charges of interference with official acts, assault on a police officer, third-degree burglary, second-degree burglary and possession of burglar’s tools. He also is held on a $10,000 cash bond for three Johnson County warrants, two Scott County warrants and a Bettendorf warrant.

Officers responded at 1 a.m. to an alarm at the school, according to a press release from the police department. Officers located a broken window at the school and heard glass breaking south of Lincoln. Ruiz was located walking east in the 1800 block of 13th Avenue South and fled from officers, running west on 13th Avenue South.

Ruiz was grabbed by an officer and allegedly swung a crowbar at the officer, striking him in the chest, according to the release. Ruiz was apprehended moments later by the police.

The broken window at Lincoln was repaired Monday, according to a statement by Clinton Superintendent Deb Olson.

“At first glance, it doesn’t appear anything was taken from the building,” Olson added. “I know that I appreciate the work that our police do with investigating and keeping us safe.”
