Agency plans to purchase wetland

CLINTON — The Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency plans to purchase .49 acres of certified wetland for $24,500.

The CCASWA is being mandated to replace wetland that was removed in 2007.

After spending five years trying to create acceptable replacement wetland at the landfill, the agency was informed the area would not work.

During September’s CCASWA meeting, the board was told that it could either try to create a replacement wetland and have to go through another five years, or purchase the certified wetland from a wetland bank.

“It would cost more and require a lot more attention on our part if we try to find land on our property and establish,” CCASWA Director of Operations Brad Seward said. “It seemed like a good idea back in 2007 and here we sit in 2012 with a failed wetland that we tried to establish.”

Last month, the board was told there was not any wetland property available.

However, Seward informed the board recently that wetland bank credits have become available.

“Imagine that,” Seward said. “You get enough people out there asking and they’re ready all of a sudden.”

While Seward admitted that $24,500 seems like a lot for .49 acres, he said they have been assured that is the current going rate.
