After approving the $21 million bid for the new middle school, Clinton School District officials had one question: When can we start?
Bids for the new middle school were opened Dec. 13. According to Randy Fuller, of Estes Construction, 107 bids were received.
“It’s very encouraging to see this kind of interest in our project,” Fuller said
Bids for the middle school without the additional west parking lot and the four classrooms came in slightly more than the $20 million budget at $20,420,724. The bids with the four additional classrooms and west parking lot was $20,913,621 — under the $21 million the board anticipated.
There is an additional $372,294 cost for food service. This is being paid for by the food service program, not through taxes.
Board president Gregg Obren questioned wether the 1-cent sales tax, which is paying for the school, will be able to cover the additional cost.
“When we went through this process with Piper Jaffray, we were looking at that time as I was seeing $20 million being in our grasp to be able to do that. Now we’re talking $21 million.
Are we comfortable with that not only as a board, but are we comfortable as a community?” Obren asked.
CFO Jan Culbertson explained that the project will start with $8 to $9 million the district has on hand and then the district will do a revenue bond based on the future revenue from the one-cent sales tax. In the future, the district would see a negative balance, but would be able to manage it, according to Matthew Gillaspie with Piper Jaffray, who presented to the board in October.
“He was comfortable with the $20 million and I don’t think $900,000 in addition to that would really be a problem,” Culbertson said.
Board members unanimously voted to pursue the project with the additional parking lot and classrooms.
“Today you know what the cost is. Five years from now, you don’t know what the cost will be,” Board member Jack Wenzel said.
The work for the new school will begin on March 1 and groundbreaking will take place on March 21.
It is anticipated that sixth, seventh and eighth grade students will fill the halls in the 2014-2015 school year.
