WWII-era grenade packs no punch

AMESBURY, Mass. — Discovery of a World War II-era grenade prompted police to block off a neighborhood street, but the state police bomb unit determined the potentially explosive pineapple was a dud.

Workers for the local water department discovered the 70-year-old grenade Tuesday half-buried in a yard. As a precaution, residents were asked to stay inside their homes.

It was placed it in a thick black box, nicknamed the “Frag Bag,” and then stored it in the back of a truck.

The discovery of World War II-era grenades is nothing new in Amesbury. Over the years, the relics have been found around the community, according to authorities.
