Fine arts weekend coming to Ashford University

Theater, music events planned on campus, around Clinton

CLINTON — It will be a fine arts weekend for Ashford University when several campus organizations present a play and two music events Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 2.

“Life: It's All Relative,” a play consisting of nine short skits – including six written by students – is being staged by the Ashford University Fine Arts Club on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Mullany Theater at 7 p.m. There will be no charge to see the skits – most of which are comedies – but donations will be accepted.

Earlier Saturday, the Ashford University Wind Ensemble will present its “Concert for Winter” in St. Clare Hall (C3600) at 2 p.m. Included in the concert will be a performance of Sergei Prokofiev's “Peter and the Wolf” arranged for band by Jim Curnow, with narration by Dr. Curt Lowe, Ashford’s dean of the College of Liberal Arts. The band will also perform “High Bridge March” by Jim Curnow; “Jacomo” by Frank Erickson; the “Flower Duet” from the opera “Lakme of Leo Delibes,” featuring two Ashford student flutists; “A Carole King Portrait” arranged by John Cacavas, and “Roaring 20’s Medley” arranged by Andrew Balent.

In honor of the season, the band will play three Christmas selections: “A Child is Born” arranged by Elliot Del Borgo, “I Saw Three Ships” arranged by Larry Kerchner and “Away in a Manger” arranged by Tom Wallace. As is customary, the band will finish with a surprise selection. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Ashford University Concert Choir wraps up the special weekend when it participates in Clinton’s annual performance of George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2, at Zion Lutheran Church, 439 Third Ave. South. The choir will join RiverChor, soloists, and an orchestra in presenting Handel’s oratorio. The public is invited and there is no charge to attend the event.
