Low Tides and Highways performs at Wild Rose
CLINTON — A new local musical show will be bringing the music and fun of Jimmy Buffett to the Clinton area.
The nine-piece Jimmy Buffett tribute band, Low Tides and Highways, will be making their second appearance tonight at the Wild Rose Casino. Band member Mike Pickney said they expect the show, which is already sold out, to be a success.
Pickney began recruiting people for this ensemble in August. However, the idea being part of a Jimmy Buffett tribute show is something Pickney said he has wanted for several years.
“I’ve always liked Jimmy Buffett music,” said Pickney, adding, “I really like the people who frequent his concerts, the ‘parrot heads.’”
Pickney, who performs in another local band, the Slough Buoys, said he felt a a tribute band like this would be an interesting change from other bands. He tried to gather people for a Jimmy Buffett tribute band three to four years ago with little success. Pickney said he was lucky this time to find just the right people.
Since September, the group has been meeting to perfect their performance. Pickney said the group worked hard and took the practices seriously. He said the members have adopted an extremely professional attitude toward the show.
“The practices have come together real well. The show has come together real well,” said Pickney.
Low Tides and Highways consists of Dan Budde on keyboards, Joe Hlubek on harmonica, Steve Van Horn on drums, Kristin Jones on vocals, JaCi Waldorf on vocals, Pickney on bass and vocals, Chuck Soenksen percussion and vocals, Brent Tinderholt on lead guitar and Scott Manon on lead vocals and guitar. Manon takes on the role of Jimmy Buffett and Pickney said he does an excellent job.
“He sings like him. He has Jimmy Buffett’s charisma,” said Pickney.
Pickney said he is expecting Low Tides and Highways to be a success. He said they have received a good deal of support since their first performance on Jan. 31 at Sin City. Pickney said they hope to offer a Jimmy Buffett experience to those unable to attend the real thing.
“A lot of people can’t get tickets to see Jimmy Buffet, because they’re very expensive, they’re on a lottery system. I mean, You’ve got to be lucky to get tickets for Jimmy Buffet concerts,” said Pickney. He said the band should be extremely accessible to a variety of people.
“It kind of appeals to a wide age range. You know, there’s people who are 21 that love Buffet and there’s people who are 68 years old,” added Kristin Jones, who provides vocals in the group.
Low Tides and Highways expect to perform at local fairs, festivals, parties and the Wild Rose Casino.
Pickney said they hope to perform at the Wild Rose three to four times a year. He said this group offers a unique experience to people, whether they are fans of Jimmy Buffett or not.
“The shows will be fun and we’ll be giving out leis and there will be beach balls flying,” said Pickney.
