FULTON, Ill. —
Goblins, ghosts, jokers, clowns and more creepy creatures will be wreaking havoc on the halls of Fulton High School this weekend.
Student Council members are excited to host their Haunted School once again after several sporadic years.
“It’s going to be so much fun,” Student Council President Kyle Wiebenga said. “Even more fun because of the anticipation from not having it last year.”
Visitors can partake in the spooky fun from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the school, 1207 12th St. The cost is $7, which goes toward the cost of creating the event and student council projects. Money raised goes toward school events like dances and student council convention trips.
This event has been a semi-tradition at the school, starting in 2008 and continuing every other year. Last year, the group was unable to hold the event due to damages in the gym.
Council members developed a design for the Haunted School, which forms a maze weaving through the gym and several hallways. Industrial Arts students then put the plan into action by building walls separating the terrifying rooms and dark halls. The students also will use materials from past years.
“It’s a lot of work, but a lot of fun,” Student Council Vice President Krista Temple said.
In the past, the hard work has paid off greatly and is likely to continue. In 2010, the group broke even in their first night and were able to use all the funds raised the second night toward events.
From ghosts to spiders, the council works hard to make sure that there is something to scare everyone. Each council member comes up with a theme for a room and then helps gather actors to portray it. The event is completely student-run, from the designing to the building and from the makeup to the acting.
“I’d say about half of the school participates in some way or another,” Wiebenga said. “Everyone looks forward to it.”
Haunted School provides enjoyment to not only the high school students, but also middle school students and the community.
“The best part is seeing the community come out and appreciate and enjoy the event,” Student Council member Brianna Bissens.
