FULTON, Ill. —
Thrifty shoppers filled the streets on Friday taking advantage of more than 70 garage sales in the city as part of the Lincoln Buy-Way yard sale.
The annual sale stretches across five states along the historic Lincoln Highway.
“It’s a great event for the community because it draws in a lot more people than just one sale would,” Heather Bennett, executive director of the Fulton Chamber of Commerce, said. “Many of the shoppers make a day of it; some even stay the weekend.”
Fulton has had the community garage sale for about 15 to 20 years and has been part of the Lincoln Buy-Way sale for six years, according to Bennett. The average turnout is about 65 sales. While 67 sales were registered this year, at least eight more people contacted Bennett after the registration date to become part of the sale.
With a wide variety of items from parakeets to appliances to Christmas decorations and more, buyers and sellers took advantage of the many deals in Fulton. Dick and Irma Bland already participated in a sale in Morrison, Ill., recently, but had plenty of leftovers to sell at the event in Fulton. The Blands, who live on Eighth Avenue, also benefit from living on a street with multiple sales.
“There has been a lot of foot traffic through here,” Irma said. “Everyone benefits from this sale and the weather couldn’t be better.”
Loretta Marcum, also a resident of Eighth Avenue, kept busy with her sale that included bicycles, children’s toys, clothes and a 2006 Schwinn scooter.
“I’ve participated in this sale before and it seems to go very well,” Marcum said. “We’ve definitely kept busy with a lot of visitors.”
Businesses and organizations also saw the benefits of participating in the sale. Multiple downtown businesses held sidewalk sales and the River Bend Senior Center provided space for vendors and crafters to display their goods. Heritage Canyon provided unique antiques as well as baked treats to raise money to support the historic site and its many events.
“By being a part of the sale, our goal is just to bring more people out to Heritage Canyon,” Early American Crafter Donna Smith said. “So many people don’t even know this place exists and the more people come out here the more support we get.”
Several surrounding communities in Illinois are participating in the event including Rochelle, DeKalb and Ashton, Ill. The route starts in West Virginia and runs through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa covering 250 miles. The event started in 2005 and is held annually on the second full weekend of August.
