CLINTON —
Clinton seniors spoke to Congressional candidate John Archer on Friday.
Archer’s campaign announced the creation of the Seniors for Archer Coalition, which includes more than 100 Iowa seniors. Archer visited the Sarah Harding Retirement Community to answer questions and speak on his plans if he is elected to congress.
“I am grateful for the tremendous support we’ve received from seniors,” Archer said. “As I have traveled throughout the entire Second District, I’ve seen firsthand that Iowa seniors are deeply concerned with the path our country is on, and so am I.”
Archer spoke with Clinton seniors about the economy, national deficit and medicare. He expressed support in reduceing the “fraud, waste and abuse” in many government programs.
He told the group that the country has to tighten its belt and cut spending. He also spoke about medical insurance and medicare, promising them that he will not touch their medicare if elected.
“And a promise made is a promise kept,” Archer said during the event. He added that he will work to ensure that medicare is preserved for future generations as well.
“I have two great-grandchildren. I want to make sure Medicare is preserved is preserved for them. We need someone in Congress who will stop kicking the can down the road. We need John Archer,” Coalition member Dorothy Camp, 96, of Clinton, said in a release.
In an interview after the event, Archer said he was happy to interact with these seniors. He added that he has been trying to travel to all of the counties and visit different groups. Archer said he is trying to appeal to all segments of the population.
“Our strategy is not to divide and conquer. Our strategy is to include everyone,” Archer said.
Archer spent the day in Clinton, visiting different groups, including the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce, Clinton Community College and the Republican headquarters.
Archer is challenging U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack in the upcoming election.
