CLINTON —
Dozens of Clinton citizens walked Thursday to support peace.
Clinton’s Stop the Hate/Show the Love annual walk for peace began at Clinton Community College and ended in the grassy area outside of Kehl Arena at Ashford University.
Before the walk, children made posters promoting peace. The Clinton Peace Coalition presented peace poles to the various Clinton schools.
Laura Anderson, from the coalition, said there are more than 200,000 peace poles standing in almost every country throughout the world as the most recognized international peace symbol and monument.
“It is the hope of the Clinton Peace Coalition that these peace poles will stand as a reminder that, just as mathematics, languages, sciences and the arts are essential to growing healthy and productive kids, so too are the social skills they are learning: team-building, collaboration, appreciation for diversity and respect for one another,” Anderson said. “All of which are essential to peace in our schools, peace in our homes, peace in our cities and peace on earth.”
Iowa Rep. Mary Wolfe read the proclamation of the United Nations International Day of Peace. Representatives from both Clinton Community College and Ashford University thanked everyone involved with the walk.
“And most of all we’d like to thank you (the walkers) for your participation,” CCC Dean Ron Serpliss said.
The Ashford University Choir sang spiritual songs as walkers made it to Ashford University. The event ended at the university with the releasing of monarch butterflies by Marion Johnson.
