CLINTON —
A new addition will be part of the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration this year.
Committee members for the annual event are looking for nominations for the first Little Peace and Justic award.
The award will be presented to area kindergarten through eighth grade students who have exemplified Martin Luther King’s teachings by choosing a peaceful resolution to a problem. Students in area schools are given the opportunity to nominate fellow classmates who have followed in King’s footsteps and acted as peace-makers.
Nominations are in the form of short essays. Interested students can pick up entry forms in their school office, at the YWCA, or by submitting their essay online on the Events page of the YWCA website at www.ywcaclinton.org. Winning submissions will be read by their authors and awards will be presented at the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Clinton Community College.
This year marks the 25th year that the Clinton MLK committee has hosted this event. This year’s celebration will kick off with a re-enactment of a civil rights march. Those wishing to participate in the march should convene at Unity Center, 562 Fifth Ave. South. The march will begin at 2 p.m. and will follow a route to Clinton Community College where the celebration will begin at 2:30 pm.
The key-note speaker will be D’Army Bailey, an actor, lawyer, civil-rights activist, founder of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, and author of the book, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Journey.” The event also will include presentations of the 11th annual MLK Peace and Justice award, as well as music and refreshments.
Canned good donations will be accepted in honor of the MLK Day of Service and will be donated to local pantries.
