Wounded Warrior benefit raises more than $16,000

FULTON, Ill. — With overwhelming support from the community, the first Wounded Warriors Benefit was a success, raising more than $16,000.

The amount raised was more than $1,000 greater than the goal, a very beneficial discrepancy.

“We had so many vets from all over come to the event,” organizer Barb Suehl-Janis said. “It was a really great turnout.”

While getting the event started rested primarily in her hands, the community made the event possible. American Legion of Fulton put up flags downtown to honor the event, Kiwanis Club of Fulton led a bucket brigade and both Clinton High School and Fulton High School cheerleaders cheered on every veteran who entered the event. Fulton Masonic Lodge also had a bake sale to raise money for the cause and made $1,000.

Before the event even started, Suehl-Janis had already received $2,650 toward her goal of $15,000. With the amount of hard work and support required, plans for a future benefit are uncertain.

“We would love to have an event like this again, but maybe not every year,” Suehl-Janis said. “There is definitely a need and it’s such a great cause.”

After expenses were taken out, more than $14,000 was sent to the Wounded Warrior Project. To learn more about the Wounded Warrior Project, visit http://www.proudsupporterwwp.org.
