FULTON, Ill. —
Travel, food and nature are the focuses for the 2013 Wild Winter Wednesday programs announced on Wednesday.
Programs are held Wednesdays in January, February and March from 9 to 11 a.m.
This is the third year that educators at the Windmill Cultural Center have organized the adult programs. All programs are presented by local citizens or businesses.
“We have put together some more interesting programs this year,” Educator Nancy Kolk said.
Wild programs kick off on Jan. 2 with a presentation by Millers and educators who recently traveled to Ireland for a cultural exchange at Skerries Mills. Educators Betty Wiebenga and Pam VanZuiden and millers Heidi Kolk and Judy Holesinger spent four days at Skerries Mills, immersing themselves in the culture and inner workings of the 12-acre complex that includes a water mill, two windmills, a cafe and a two-story gift shop.
Presentations on travel continue with programs on exploring the islands of New Zealand on Jan. 9 and 16. Ron and Connie Koehn will share their experiences from their travel to the north island, followed by their adventure on the south island. Travel programs will finish with “Quad City Airport, Lindbergh, Earhart and Beyond,” a presentation by David T. Coopman, an employee at the airport, who authored a book on the subject, on Jan. 23.
A panel of antiquers will answer questions about old items at the Jan. 30 program. Cafe specialities will also be available for sale during the special event from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
On Feb. 6 visitors can enjoy culinary delights courtesy of Pam VanZuiden and Judy Holesinger. The two will be serving up crepes and providing an informational demonstration. Food presentations will continue with roasting coffee beans with Benjamin DeWaard on Feb. 13, Coca Cola collecting with Janet Medendorp, popcorn with Popcorn Charlie on Feb. 20 and mushrooms and berries with Mitch Gravert on Feb. 27.
The last installment of the programs in March will focus on nature, the outdoors and spring time. On March 6, Bob Motz will discuss spring wildflowers, followed by a presentation on orphan trains with Carol Chandler on March 13. Butterflies will be the star of the event on March 20 led by Barb Hagenson and baseball stadiums will be featured by Randy Kester and Burlington Trailways at the final presentation on March 27.
Light refreshments will be served. The events are free and the public is welcome to attend.
