FULTON, Ill. —
No one was injured in a fire that engulfed a home Thursday in rural Fulton.
“It was through the roof when we arrived on scene,” Fulton Fire Chief Joe Michaelsen said about the structure fire at 17166 Diamond Road, Fulton.
A neighbor called in the fire at 1:21 p.m. Whiteside County Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Drey confirmed no one was home when the fire started. He added that the property owner, Terry Beswick, had left the house at approximately 1 p.m. with his daughter, who lives in the home with her daughter.
Drey responded to the scene to control traffic as emergency personnel from Fulton, Morrison, Ill., Thomson, Ill., Albany, Ill., Clinton and Camanche were called to the scene. Michaelsen said mutual aid was called to the rural address for extra water. At approximately 2:30 p.m., Michaelsen expected firefighters to remain on scene for at least a couple more hours.
The structure is a total loss. Drey noted a spot on the east end where the damage goes all the way down the side.
The Fulton Fire Department was preparing to investigate the cause of the fire at 2:30 p.m. While no cause has been determined, Drey said the property owner had been burning leaves earlier in the day. He added Beswick reported he thought the leaves were extinguished before he left.
The Gateway Area Chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist the family.
