MANLIUS, Ill. —
From the first possession of the game at Bureau Valley High School on Friday night, Fulton had control of the game.
The Steamers won 38-13.
“This week we got off to a good start and we just kept it up from there.” Fulton Coach Patrick Lower said. “We had a quiet confidence about us in pre-game and even throughout the first half. I really liked our frame of mind.”
Fulton didn’t have too much of a problem putting the ball in the end zone on the first drive and weren’t challenged too much during the rest of the game either. After the opening kickoff went into the end zone putting the Steamers at their own 20-yard line, they marched up the field 80 yards on six plays for the touchdown.
The offense continued to run through the Bureau Valley defensive line and even the secondary with little resistance on their way to 333 rushing yards as a team. Junior Austin Regenwether led the way with 161 yards on the night for the Steamers with 132 coming in the first half.
As the Storm made adjustments in the second half, expecting Regenwether to get the ball more, the Steamers counteracted with Josh Ballard who didn’t get a carry until the third quarter. On his second one he ran 41 yards for a touchdown that put Fulton up 30-0.
Lower and the rest of the Fulton staff continued to use all of their options, going to different ball carriers and hitting four receivers.
“We made plays when we needed to make plays,” Lower said. “It doesn’t matter what kind of gameplan you have or whatever, you have to execute and our kids executed tonight, really for four quarters.”
The defense shined for the Steamers as well on Friday night shutting out the Storm for two and a half quarters. Bureau Valley turned the ball over four times on two fumbles and two interceptions.
“(The) defense played outstanding, and our kids just really played well and I’m very, very proud of them,” Lower said.
The Steamers secondary continued to show that while the Steamers play a more run prevention defense with the 4-4 configuration the secondary can still get the job done. Austin Manon added two more interceptions to his rapidly growing season total and the rest of the secondary knocked some key passes to the ground providing solid coverage.
“This was a very good win for us,” Lower said.
The Steamers will look to ride their stellar play into next Friday’s game against rival Morrison.
