ROCHELLE, Ill. —
First, Emmanuel Marcos-Teles lost a shoe. Then, he lost his first race of the year.
Running most of the race without shoes, Marcos-Teles finished 8 seconds behind Marc Dubrick of DeKalb, Ill., on a cold, rainy Thursday at the Rochelle European Style Invitational cross country meet.
“It’s a European-style course where you run through a creek and over hay bales,” Clinton coach Tony Smith said. “Emmanuel lost one of his shoes in the mud, so he stopped in the race to take off his other shoe. He ran 2 miles without any shoes and still got second.
Dubrick, who placed 64th last fall in the Illinois Class 2A state meet, ran the 4,800-yard course in 16 minutes, 24 seconds. Marcos-Teles was second in 16:32.
DeKalb put all seven of its runners in the top 10 and won the team title with 22 points. Clinton was second with 49.
“The whole team ran really well, especially after running a meet on Tuesday,” Smith said.
Nathan Schroeder finished seventh in 17:22 for the River Kings, and Bret Determan (11th in 17:58) and Jon Cady (12th in 17:59) finished just outside of the top 10.
Clinton’s girls team finished third out of five teams with 82 points. DeKalb won the title with 39 points, 5 fewer than Rochelle. Michelle Dobbs of Rochelle was the individual winner in 18:59 on the 4,800-yard course.
Kim Kaster led Clinton with a sixth-place finish in 21:21, while Shelby Weets took ninth in 21:43.
