CLINTON — A busy schedule has created a lot of weary and sore swimmers at Clinton High School.

So a day off Wednesday was welcomed — no matter how they used it — with the fifth meet in 15 days set for Thursday night and the annual Clinton Invitational coming up Saturday.

“I rested and had some physical therapy,” Trevor Kao said.

“I definitely caught up on some sleep,” Bret Determan added.

“I played some video games,” Josh Hill said.

The effects certainly were positive for the River Kings’ three captains. Each won two individual events and contributed to victories in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays as the River Kings defeated visiting Burlington 110-53 on Thursday night at the Clinton pool. The hosts won all but one event.

“From the times today, it helped a lot,” Kao said of the day off. “We had a lot of people sore and hurting, so it was nice to ice and heal.

“I’m pleased with all the firsts; they helped the team score tremendously. Without those firsts it would have been a close meet. The seconds and thirds also helped a lot. It was a great meet as a whole.”

Hill said he was most pleased with the performance in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. He swam a 51.65-second anchor leg, following Determan, Nate Harden and Kao into the pool. Their time of 3:38.71 was more than a half-minute faster than Clinton’s second unit, which claimed second place in the event.

“I especially liked the 400 free relay at the end,” Hill, a sophomore, said. “All four of us swam great. We had fast turns, good starts and great underwaters. I didn’t PR (record a personal record), but I came close.

“Almost the whole team was at the end pushing us on, and even though we’re under the water, we can still hear them. Our team has really bonded.”

The same foursome opened the meet by winning the medley relay in 1:52.17.

Individually, Kao won the 200 individual medley (2:14.04) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.13), Determan won the 100 butterfly (57.19) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.84) and Hill won the 200 freestyle (1:53.48) and the 100 freestyle (52.09). Clinton’s other wins came from Harden in the 50 freestyle (24.67) and Carson Peck in the 500 freestyle (6:30.00).

“I think we did quite well,” Clinton coach Albert Hayton said. “We’re swimming pretty tired and have got a few sore shoulders.”

The day off might have been just what Determan needed, as he edged Jordan Stevens by .28 of a second in the butterfly. It was the closest race of the night.

“I was pleased with the 100 fly,” Determan said. “Stevens was sixth last year in the district and I got fifth. He was beating me (Thursday) for the first three laps, but endurance played a key role in that (win).”

Now, the River Kings will try to carry that energy over into Saturday’s invitational, which begins at 10 a.m.

“I think (Thursday’s tuneup) was what we need,” Hill said. “We won this meet. Everyone is kind of positive and going in with pretty high spirits.”
