Records fall as Queens win

BETTENDORF — A match after becoming the second Clinton volleyball player to go over 1,000 career kills, Alyssa Wing set a school record and closed in on another.

Wing had 39 kills in the River Queens’ five-game win over Bettendorf. That broke the school record of 34 set by Sharon Kramer in 1981 and tied by Riki Stahl in 1992.

“That’s incredible,” Clinton coach Mark Massey said. “Obviously I knew she was capable of doing it. Volleyball is a strange sport. In basketball, a good player can score a lot of points in any game. In volleyball to set a record like that you need to go five games and have it be competitive. We had both of those.”

She now has 1,044 career kills, just three behind Stahl’s school record.

Wing wasn’t the only one to set a school record in the 25-27, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10 win. Monique Harris dished out 61 assists, breaking the record of 57 set four times, most recently by Angela Butt in 2003.

“Obviously our kids are tired, but it’s a good tired,” Massey said. “They blocked a lot of our balls. But I don’t know if anybody can dig our offense the whole night if we’re running it well, and Mo was running it well.”

Clinton (20-9, 7-2 Mississippi Athletic Conference) also got 21 kills from Erin Wenzel, which set a third record.

“We’ve never had our second-highest kill total be over 20,” Massey said. “So that’s a record for two hitters combined.”

Bettendorf (18-11, 6-3) blew a 2-1 lead over Clinton late in the conference season for the second year in a row. Last year, Bettendorf then overcame a deficit to knock Clinton out of the first round of postseason. With a potential rematch looming in the regional final, Massey is hoping that part of history doesn’t repeat itself.

“It does a lot for us,” he said of Tuesday’s win. “We use words like resilience, perseverance, patience and trust. We came back on their court and they weren’t playing bad. They were playing great and pounding the ball.”

Massey said it was a total team effort that propelled the River Queens to a win in their regular-season finale, which gave them  third place in the MAC. Pleasant Valley and North Scott tied for the title at 8-1.

“I’m very proud of the CHS volleyball tradition and this was a night that will live on,” Massey said.

Clinton JV drops 2 games

Bettendorf beat Clinton 21-7, 21-11 in junior varsity action Tuesday night.

Hannah Dehner led Clinton with two kills and five digs. Jordan Nelson dished out eight assists and Griffin Rasche served an ace.

CHS sophomores fall

Bettendorf beat Clinton 25-10, 25-18 in sophomore volleyball action Tuesday night, despite two aces each from Raven Jones, Liz Wilke and Cheyenne Johnson.

Jones led the team with five assists, and Rhegan Paulsen had three kills.
