GOOSE LAKE — An eight-point scoring run in the first quarter gave Northeast an edge it never lost, and the Rebels defeated Prince of Peace 62-49 on Saturday in Big East Conference girls basketball.

After struggling for the first three quarters Friday in a 57-46 win at Lisbon, Northeast played well in the opening three quarters Saturday, according to coach Charles Jargo, establishing a 49-24 advantage with 2:20 left in the third quarter and leading by 20 after three periods against the Irish. The weekend wins improved Northeast’s record to 5-1, 4-0 in conference play. Prince of Peace slipped to 2-5, 1-3).

Addie Oberman scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead Northeast. She also had five assists. Morgan McAleer had 12 points for the Rebels, and Breanne Butler added 10 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Karli Atkinson led the Irish with 14 points, while Julia Isenhour added 12.

“The Irish girls could not overcome a stingy Northeast defense,” Prince of Peace coach Maggie Furlong said. “The Irish trailed early and could not find an offensive answer to Northeast’s half-court defense. Northeast held Julia Isenhour to zero points in the first half.”

In Friday’s win, Oberman finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Butler added 22 points and 12 blocked shots. Danae Diedrich dished out seven assists. Lisbon led 9-6 after one quarter, but the Rebels came back to take a 26-24 lead at the half. They still led by two after three quarters before pulling away.

Preston rolls at home

PRESTON — Preston raced to a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes and never looked back Saturday, defeating visiting Central City 63-30 in non-conference girls basketball.

Cassie Aldis scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, leading the Trojans (4-1) to a 38-10 halftime lead.

Brooke Krogman led Preston with 16 points, while Rose Strait added 12.

Bellevue wins on road

TIPTON — Bellevue scored the first nine points of the second quarter to build a double-digit lead on its way to a 51-34 non-conference win at Tipton.

Mariah Steines (10 points) capped the run with a 3-point basket that increased Bellevue’s lead to 19-5. The Comets led just 6-5 with two minutes left in the first quarter.

Kelsey Ernst paced the Comets (3-2) with 16 points.

Newman beats Erie

STERLING, Ill. — Sterling Newman used a strong third quarter to turn a one-point halftime deficit into a 27-22 lead as it beat Erie 38-32 in Three Rivers Conference girls basketball Saturday.

“We can’t miss 10 shots at point-blank range and expect to win,” Erie coach Brian Howell said. “But it doesn’t help when you get hammered na no call. Also, Newman shooting 14-for-18 at the (free-throw) line while we were only 5-for-9 doesn’t help.”

Courtney Cobert led the Cardinals (7-3, 2-3 TRAC-9) with 14 points, while Rachel Cobert “had a monster game,” according to Howell, with nine points and 20 rebounds.

Prophets improve to 10-1

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Riley Walters scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the opening quarter, giving Prophetstown a lead it never lost Saturday in a 45-30 Three Rivers Conference win against Kewanee.

Cassie Reiley added 13 points and Clare Kramer 11 for the Prophets, who improved to 10-1 and stayed unbeaten in TRAC-9 play at 5-0.

West Carroll falls

SAVANNA, Ill. — Michaela Marty poured in 22 points and Kalyn Theill added 21 to lead East Dubuque past West Carroll 65-36 on Friday in Northwest Upstate Illini Conference girls action.

The Thunder stayed close for a period, trailing just 14-10 after one quarter, but Theill dropped in 13 points in the second stanza as East Dubuque built a 34-14 halftime lead.

Ieshia Larson scored 19 points to lead West Carroll.

Maquoketa loses

MAQUOKETA — Western Dubuque trailed 9-8 one minute into the second quarter but outscored Maquoketa 8-0 for the rest of the half on the way to a 40-34 win Friday night in WaMaC Conference girls basketball.
