Jones, Bormann named all-state honor

Pair earns second-team honors

DES MOINES — Clinton junior Jalen Jones and Preston senior Colton Bormann wereelected to the Iowa boys basketball all-state second team in their respective classes by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

“I was hoping that would happen,” Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said of the Class 4A honor for Jones.

“I’m pretty happy,” Jones said. “I didn’t expect it. I worked really hard, and I’m glad it paid off.”

Jones led Clinton in points, assists and steals and was second on the team in rebounds and blocked shots.

“The amount of pressure put on him this year was huge,” Lawrence said. “He was one of the main focal points for every team’s defensive effort. He shouldered the load for us in scoring, distributing whatever we needed.”

Jones scored 19 points a game, good for fourth in Class 4A, but more importantly led the River Kings to seven wins after they combined for one win the previous two seasons.

“I just tried to do my best to get as many wins as possible for my team,” Jones said. “I worked on my shot a lot. As the point guard, I’d try to get my teammates open and get them the ball in close to the basket so they could score.”

Jones finished in the top 20 in Class 4A with 75 assists and 7.0 rebounds a game.

“He deserves it,” Lawrence said. “It’s definitely a big honor for him.”

Jones was one of five Mississippi Athletic Conference players to receive Class 4A honors. North Scott sophomore Cortez Seales was selected to the first team, Bettendorf junior Cole Clearmann was on the second team and Bettendorf junior Kendall Jacks and Burlington senior Justin Randall earned third-team honors. Davenport Assumption senior Billy Daniel was named to the first team in Class 3A.

Preston senior Colton Bormann was named to the second team in Class 1A. It was the third straight sports season Bormann received all-state recognition after being a second-team offensive lineman in football and a third-team pitcher during baseball.

Bormann made the most 3-pointers (90) in the state and was the most accurate shooter from beyond the arc at 58.4 percent. Bormann, who graduates as Preston’s all-time leading scorer, averaged 16.6 points and 5.4 rebounds a game.

West Des Moines Valley senior Peter Jok was named Mr. Basketball. Jok, who will play basketball at Iowa next year, was Class 4A’s leading scorer at 23.6 points a game.
