After losing its first game of the season Tuesday night, Preston felt as if it had something to prove Friday night against Camanche.
Colton Bormann drilled a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead. Isaah Jackson countered with a 3-pointer of his own to tie it.
Jackson scored the next Camanche points, just over eight minutes later after 13 straight points by Preston, 12 from Chase Zaruba.
“This was definitely a statement game,” Preston senior Colton Bormann said after the 75-43 win. “Our first loss was tough. ... We came out strong tonight. We needed it.”
Preston (12-1, 10-1 conference) remains alone in first place in the Big East Conference, one game in the loss column ahead of Northeast, which beat Preston 46-44 on Tuesday.
The key for Northeast was holding Bormann and Zaruba to eight points on four field goal attempts combined. Against Camanche, Zaruba led all scorers with 26 and Bormann scored 19.
“Tonight we got some shots off,” Bormann said. “They were hard to come by in the Northeast game. When me and him get going on the same night, we’re a tough team to stop.”
Early on, it was all Zaruba. He drilled a 3-pointer to break the 3-3 tie and hit a layin on the next possession. Following a Camanche miss, Zaruba buried a deep 3-pointer to make the score 11-3.
“I was just feeling it while I was warming up,” Zaruba said. “I was being confident and following through. My teammates looked for me, and I was open. It worked out well.”
A 3-pointer by Zaruba midway through the second quarter put Preston ahead 26-8.
“We stressed getting back on defense,” Bormann said. “I thought we did a good job of that. We hit quite a few shots. We jumped on them early and kept our foot on the gas pedal.”
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Bormann gave the Trojans a 44-14 lead with 4:40 left in the third quarter and the rout was on.
“We couldn’t get any shots to fall,” Camanche coach Josh Davis said. “We tried to go with more of a scoring lineup and didn’t get what we needed to out of it. I thought we had some open looks not go in early. Then 3s started raining in for them. ... We’re not a very good come-from-behind team.”
Preston coach Dan Beck said the biggest difference was how his team played defense.
“We played with energy,” he said. “We ran guys off their spots and didn’t let them shoot a bunch of set shots.”
