Baseball roundup: Lisbon scores early, often vs. Irish

Herald Staff Report

CLINTON — Anthony Sinn homered in the bottom of the first inning, but that was about all Prince of Peace had to cheer about Wednesday as Lisbon rolled to a 29-1 baseball victory against the Irish in the Big East Conference.

“It was just a poor performance by us,” Prince of Peace coach Bob Mulholland said.

The Lions wasted no time starting the rout, scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning against Seth Hinrichs.

“Our biggest problem is lack of focus,” Mulholland said. “We had at least seven errors. Every time it seemed like we got two outs, it would take forever to get the third.”

. Sinn hit his home run in the bottom of the first and then came in to pitch during the second inning.

“Other than that, I’m not sure if we had more than two hits,” Mulholland said.

The win kept Lisbon (11-3) perfect in the Big East at 5-0. Prince of Peace fell to 0-6.

Bellevue tops Camanche

BELLEVUE — Bellevue scored twice in each of the first two innings and then held on to beat Camanche 4-2 on Wednesday in the big East.

“We were a little shaky in the first inning,” Camanche coach Darryl Cochran said. “We had an error on the shortstop on the second batter, and one run scored on a wild pitch.

Brett Boeckenstedt drove in the first run for Bellevue (8-3, 3-3 Big East) win a single in the first inning, and Cole Reeg hit a two-run single in the second.

“He (Camanche starting pitcher TJ Runge) really settled down after that and ended up with eight strikeouts,” Cochran said.

Camanche slipped to 3-12, 2-5 Big East, but Cochran said another solid pitching performance was encouraging.

“We’re right there,” he said. “We’re just leaving a ton of runners on base. That’s the frustrating part. It seems like we’re always getting hits with two outs, so we don’t have any leeway.

“I try to keep telling the kids to hang in there. Our time’s going to come. We just have to keep hanging in there.”

The Indians also lost 10-4 to Monticello on Tuesday in non-conference action. Helped by three errors, Monticello (8-3) put the game away with a five-run seventh inning.
