Davis named All-MAC in softball
Herald staff report
Clinton softball catcher Keirstyn Davis' first tour through the Mississippi Athletic Conference resulted in an all-conference nod.
The eighth-grader became Clinton's only player on the All-MAC first team after posting some of the league's best numbers. She hit .462 with six doubles, seven triples a home run and 14 RBIs while helping the River Queens double their win total from last season.
Her batting average ranked third in the MAC and 11th in Class 4A.
She represents one of two eighth-graders on the first team, joining Davenport North's Kaela Moeller.
“We play in a tough-hitting conference, and a tough-pitching conference, as well,” Clinton second-year coach Trina Reed said, “so to be recognized after hitting over .400 in any class — especially as an eighth-grader — is a big deal.”
Bettendorf sophomore pitcher Morgan Lintz won the league's Player of the Year award.
She went 18-3 with an 0.86 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 1132⁄3 innings, while allowing opponents a .167 average against her. At the plate, she hit .487 with three home runs, 15 doubles and 40 RBIs.
North Scott coach Dennis Johnson won the Coach of the Year accolade after leading the Lancers to a conference title.
North Scott, Muscatine and Bettendorf each landed four players on the first team. The remaining teams each had one representative.
Clinton junior shortstop Colleen Ryan earned second-team honors, while teammates Erica Florance, Maddison Daniels and Katelyn Ryan made honorable mention.
Colleen Ryan, who doubled as a pitcher, hit .413 with a team-high 16 RBIs. In the circle, she went 3-9 with a 3.98 ERA.
“Colleen was a leader on our team, both with stats and mentally,” Reed said. “She was a great all-around player for us.”
Florance, the team's only senior, hit .197 with a double and eight RBIs while roaming the outfield. Daniels, an eighth-grader, pitched in a majority of Clinton's games. She went 5-9 with a 4.39 ERA in 15 appearances.
The River Queens finished 12-20 after winning five games last season. They went 3-15 in conference play, winning their first MAC game since 2006 in the process.
“I feel great about the season we had,” Reed said. “We still have some improving to do, but when I took this job, I said I wanted to improve every year. So far we've been able to do that.”
