ERIE, Ill. —
Morrison started the second half strong, outscoring Stark County 9-3, and that keyed the Mustangs’ 38-29 win Saturday at the Cliff Warkins Cardinal Classic boys basketball tournament.
Alexander Volckmann and Hunter Hamstra scored 14 points each to pace Morrison.
Tanner King scored 13 for Stark County.
Erie fades in opener
Things looked good for Erie in the first quarter of its opener Saturday at the Warkins Classic, but things turned sour after that as its seven-point lead disappeared and Stockton came back for a 53-35 victory.
The Blackhawks outscored the Cardinals 15-5 in the second period to take a 21-18 lead at halftime, then allowed just 10 points in the second half.
Trent Schubert of Stockton finished with a game-high 18 points. Jacob Johnston scored 12 points to lead Erie, and Owen McConnell scored 11.
Defending champs win
Orion, which has won the past five tournament titles, kicked off the 2012 event with a win Saturday, as did Bureau Valley and Knoxville in other games.
Dylan Schultz scored 19 points to lead Orion to a 67-45 win against Mercer County. Mercer County led 14-10 after one quarter but was outscored 23-14 in the second quarter.
Trenton Higgins scored 16 points for Mercer County.
Parker Neuhalfen poured in 30 points, Tommy Johnston added 18 and each of them went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in Bureau Valley’s 70-55 win against Kewanee Wethers-field.
Trevor Lay scored 20 points for Wethersfield.
Knoxville outscored Riverdale 24-17 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 70-64 victory.
Tyler Houston scored 20 points for Knoxville, Andrew Hale added 18 and Noah Hummel tossed in 16. Jared Richmond led Riverdale with 14.
