Area trio cited for academics

CLINTON — Marquel Schultheis of Clinton High School, Brittany Stoll of Northeast and Ryleigh Keeney of Preston have been selected to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Academic All-State Volleyball Team.

Schultheis was a two-year starter for the River Queens, who tied for the Mississippi Athletic Conference title her junior season and finished a game out of first place this season.

Keeney was a first-team All-Big East player, while Stoll was an honorable mention all-conference pick.

Student-athletes were selected on the basis of not only volleyball and athletic ability, but performance in the classroom, as measured by grade-point average, as well as overall academic ability, as indicated by ACT and/or SAT scores.

“Marquel is one of the first Academic All-State selections that Clinton volleyball has ever had, so I’m particularly proud of Marquel’s achievement,” Clinton coach Mark Massey said. “As a team, we have been consistently recognized for overall academic achievement, but for Marquel to achieve this individual distinction is truly an honor.

“Marquel is a full participant in many activities at Clinton High School, not just athletics. She is a leader in student government and was a 2012 nominee for CHS homecoming queen. I think that many staff members at CHS would say that Marquel truly exemplifies the achievements and type of student that as a staff we aspire to grow and nurture.

“Marquel is in the top 5 percent of her senior class. Marquel and Shelby Brandt of Bettendorf are the only two volleyball players from the Mississippi Athletic Conference to meet the All-State criteria, so it truly is a very unique honor for Marquel.”

Eighty-five volleyball players from across the state received the honor.
