Irish rally, complete sweep

Herald Staff Report

BELLEVUE — Prince of Peace staged a second-half comeback and opened the boys basketball season with a 53-47 come-from-behind victory against Bellevue in non-conference action Tuesday night.

The victory completed a sweep for the Irish, whose girls team defeated Bellevue 52-34 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Sean Mulholland had the hot hand for the Irish boys, scoring 14 of his game-high 25 points after intermission. The Irish trailed 30-25 at halftime but chipped away and took the lead at 35-34 midway through the third quarter. Bellevue stayed close for much of the fourth quarter before Prince of Peace sealed the win by scoring its final seven points from the free-throw line in the final couple of minutes.

“To say we got off to a slow start would be an understatement,” Prince of Peace coach Gerry Murphy said. “Our kids were not focused. When we pressed in the third quarter, we started getting some positive results, and it carried over to the fourth. We need better energy.”

Zach Reed led Bellevue with 15 points, and Tyler Ernst added 12. They scored nine and eight, respectively, in the first half to help the Comets get their lead.

In the girls game, Prince of Peace started with plenty of energy, racing to leads of 7-0 and 16-4 before closing the first period ahead 19-6.

“We came out firing,” coach David Nelson said. “What a great start for the girls tonight. We need to match the opponent’s energy, and we did for most of the game.”

Ari Aquilani scored a game-high 15 points for Prince of Peace, and Brittany Horst and KAtie Isenhour added 13 apiece.

“Ari really was on tonight, and Brittany was setting her teammates up well,” Nelson said. “Katie carried us again on the boards.”
