Herald Staff Report
DAVENPORT — Clinton changed its entire game plan minutes before it played at Davenport North on Friday. But the River Queens didn’t mind, and they came away with a 79-38 victory in their Mississippi Athletic Confer-ence basketball opener.
Shortly before they game, they learned that Amber Harrington, North’s all-state player, would miss the game. Coach Jason McEwen said the report was that Harrington had a kidney infection and had spent time in the hospital this week.
So the River Queens scrapped their defensive plans against Harrington, who scored a career-high 52 points vs. Clinton last season.
“We went from not pressing and playing a zone to pressing and playing man-to-man, and it totally changed the game,” McEwen said.. “It took us a quarter to kind of figure things out. We scored 38 in the first half and pressed the whole time and 41 in the second and didn’t press at all.”
Courntey Camp scored a career-high 20 points to lead the River Queens, whose 3-1 record matches their win total from a year ago. Ebony Jackson added a career-high 17 points, and Sarah Massey added 10.
“I think it’s nice seeing those two (Camp and Jackson) come forward tonight,” McEwen said. “They hadn’t had a real solid game until tonight. We have a good selection of guards who can play the one or two spot. Having a game like this where you can get some of those girls confidence is nice.”
McEwen also was able to use his bench. He said Colleen Ryan had been battling illness, Rachel Ryan had a sprained ankle and Paige Timion was nursing a bad back. In addition, the River Queens played without Leisha Harris, who is serving a suspension.
India Smith led North with 18 points.
