Kings put 4 in top 5 at indoor track meet

IOWA CITY — Clinton turned in four top-five performances Thursday at the Demon Indoor boys track and field meet hosted by Washington High School at the University of Iowa Rec Center.

Brady Ernst led the River Kings as he finished in a three-way tie for second place in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches. Jeff Giannettino of West Burlington/Notre Dame won the event at 6-7, while Daniel Schwarz of Fairfield and Cody Jamison of Monticello equaled Ernst in going 6-2.

Clinton’s Will Carr cleared 6-0 in the event and tied for fifth place.

Deshond Robinson turned in Clinton’s other top individual performance. He placed third in the 200-meter dash. His time of 23.35 seconds came in a winning effort in the 17th heat. Teammates Tristan Freese and Austin Flieder of Marion Linn-Mar claimed the top two spots in a head-to-head 1-2 finish in the 18th heat. Freese crossed the finish line in 23.14, Flieder in 23.29. Central DeWitt’s Jake Feldpausch took seventh in the event, winning the 15th heat in 23.91.

Robinson added a 10th-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.43), while teammate Cody Collender was 13th in 7.58 in the final. Both Robinson and Collender qualified for the finals with second-place finishes in their heat races.

Stephen Baca claimed 14th place for Clinton in the 60 hurdles in 9.48 after taking second in his heat race in 8.44.

Clinton’s other top-five finish came in the 1,600 relay. Collender, Robinson, Austin Houzenga and Jason Banker won the seventh heat in 3:38.76.
