New church to be built for Jehovah’s Witnesses
CLINTON — Local Jehovah’s Witnesses will have a new place to worship later this year after construction is complete on a building at 11th Street and 11th Avenue North.
Local Jehovah’s Witnesses previously studied in two congregations, but membership continued to outgrow two Clinton facilities. Soon, elders decided it was time to look into constructing a new building.
“Both congregations were getting bigger. We needed more space, more parking and handicap parking,” said Jens Friedrichsen. “So it was simpler and cheaper to build a new building. Both congregations will share the new building.”
The facility across the street from Clinton Community College was sold to the college in December 2005. The Kingdom Hall on North Third Street has been sold and the building will be utilized by the Clinton Community Christian Church.
Proceeds from the sale of the two buildings are being used to build the new facility. Friedrichsen said the building will be built by volunteer laborers. He noted that after months of planning, construction should move quickly in the coming months.
“It will be very interesting to see how rapidly it can come together,” he said. Friedrichsen added the members are very excited about the new building.
A design has been determined for the facility and will feature an all-brick exterior. The building will contain approximately 5,000 square feet with the main auditorium able to host up to 200 people at a time.
The building will feature several meeting rooms and a small library, while the parking lot will have enough space for up to 80 vehicles. Workers plan to begin installing underground utilities this spring and begin construction of the structure in late summer or early fall.
In the interim, both congregations will hold meetings at the Kingdom Hall of DeWitt, at 116 E. Fourth St. Sunday meetings will be held at 9:30 a.m. for the DeWitt congregation, 1 p.m. for the Clinton North congregation and 4 p.m. for the Clinton Bluff congregation.
The mid-week service, the Theocratic Ministry School and service meeting, will be held on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. for the DeWitt congregation, Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. for the Clinton North congregation and Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. for the Clinton Bluff congregation.
On April 2, both Clinton congregations will meet together to celebrate the Memorial of Christ’s Death. At 7:30 p.m., members will gather at Eagle Point Lodge for the celebration. The meeting is open to the public.
The congregations will host a special Bible talk titled “You can feel safe in this troubled world,” on April 15 in DeWitt. The DeWitt congregation may attend at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Clinton North congregation at 1 p.m. and the Clinton Bluff congregation at 4 p.m.
Anyone with questions about a meeting time or location can call Morry Renkes at 243-8107.
