CLINTON —
Nearly 26 million American children and adults have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.
“Approximately 19 million already know they have diabetes, but 7 million do not know,” Andrea Witt, RN and Mercy Medical Center certified diabetes educator, said. Witt said it is estimated that as many as another 79 million people have pre-diabetes, meaning that they are beginning to get diabetes.
Witt will be the featured speaker for the Discover Mercy program in November, a monthly education series offered at Mercy to spotlight a service or technology that provides enhanced health care services to the community. The 30-minute session will be held at 12:15 p.m. Thursday in Conference Room A and is open to the public as well as Mercy employees.
The Discover Mercy program will discuss the services provided at the Mercy Diabetes Center. The center is certified by the American Diabetes Association to provide education and support to individuals who are living with the disease.
According to Witt, diabetes can be controlled with the right information, treatment plan and follow up. When left untreated, diabetes can cause heart disease, kidney disease and may even lead to amputation or blindness. Mercy’s trained diabetes educators can work one-on-one with individuals to answer questions and provide education, tools and resources that can help people avoid complications with the disease.
“The Discover Mercy series is a way to spotlight how health care has advanced and changed,” Julie Dunn, public relations specialist with Mercy Medical Center, said. “The topics chosen educate our employees and our community on the health care services that are available right here at Mercy.”
The Discover Mercy series is free and reservations are not required. Since the series is offered during the lunch hour, participants can bring their lunch or stop by the Mercy Medical Center cafeteria to purchase a meal tray.
The series is provided as an extension of Mercy Advantage, a health and wellness program of Mercy Medical Center.
