Community garden potluck is Sunday

CLINTON — There will be a community garden harvest potluck at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Hall; everyone is welcome. The UU Hall is located at 309 30th Ave. North in Clinton.

“We hope everyone who is celebrating harvest time will join us on Sunday afternoon to share food and stories about how our gardens grew this past summer and how we will improve them in the future,” Laura Anderson, coordinator, said.

More than 40 plots were planted in the community garden. It was tended and harvested at the site at 13th Avenue North and 14th Street across from the Clinton Community School District administration building. The Ericksen Community Center, school district and Iowa State University Extension Service and 4-H joined together to promote the community garden concept with the hope of improving the health of citizens by increasing their access to affordable, organically grown fruits and vegetables and by providing educational opportunities designed to give amateur gardeners skills to effectively garden with confidence as well as offer veteran gardeners an opportunity to share their knowledge. Several youth groups as well as the Victory Center tended the plots.

Attendees should bring a dish to share, plates and silverware. Water and lemonade will be provided. There is no charge to attend.

Sustainable Clinton was launched by the Sisters of St. Francis in the fall of 2010 to create an opportunity to connect area environmentally-minded residents for monthly discussion and action about ecological issues and their impact on the Clinton area. The community garden is one among many programs and projects Sustainable Clinton has sponsored in the two years it has met.

“The community garden itself is worth celebrating,” Anderson said. “We could see that it achieved many of its goals by teaching sustainable living through gardening, creating a sense of belonging and ownership and a cooperative spirit among within community, and supporting the Blue Zones initiative by improving health through encouraging good nutrition. And now it’s time to celebrate.”
